Once out of the recovery room your baby is brought to you either to feed or just because. As you meet your baby for the first time, the realization dawns that the birth concept is truly miraculous. Staring into the baby’s face, seeing their fully formed hands and feet, you begin to see who they have turned out to be. Nine months back, you may have wondered who they might turn out to be. Will they have their fathers ears, your eyes and whose mouth would they have? Their eyes look into your face, trusting and innocent and you know, without a shred of doubt, that you will do whatever it takes to keep this baby safe, no matter how old they get. Those first few minutes open up a world to you that you had no idea even existed.
The love that begins to blossom inside of your chest for this baby is nothing like you have ever experienced before, full of wonderment, hope and awe. Throughout the next few months of physical healing, two a.m feedings, interrupted sleep and all the other new mother stressors, one look into that beautiful baby’s face is all it takes to get your situation back into perspective. A whole new set of priorities come into place. No longer in the me mode, you’re instantly transported into the baby mode, where everything you do in life is to the betterment of your child. Not a bad place to be if you’re ready for this change. To turn your focus on someone else for once in your life may be a new thing for a lot of new mothers in this day of the entitlement generation. Okay, let’s face it, unless we’re paying for the whole damn shibang, we don’t get very much say in anything and even if we are paying, well… So what’s the best thing to do with an over stressed daughter-in-law to be, her mother and your son, whose walking a tight rope trying to please you and his bride to be? Sit down, relax and pour yourself a drink. It’s not your wedding, its theirs. Let them tak the lead. You won’t be sorry. mothers-everything

Running out of options with my problem teenager, I let my frustration leak out during a visit to my aging mother who lives in a nursing home. She stared at my face as I was telling my tale of woe, nodding every few minutes. At the end of my hour long vent, she slowly leaned forward, took my hand in hers and said “Relax and enjoy this time. It will be gone in no time and you’ll realized you’ve wasted it all being mad at him because he won’t do exactly as you want him to do. He’s not perfect, but you aren’t either and trying to control his every action will only disappoint you and anger him. Now go home and let me take a nap.”

She closed her eyes and promptly began snoring. I smiled at this wise old lady and wondered why I hadn’t talked to her about this sooner. She had been the greatest Mom in the world when I was a teenager and I’d underestimated her because of her age. Learn something new every day.
